I apologize to my f-list for the shenanigans that occurred last weekend. [info]arachnospores and I should not be trusted with operating heavy machinery when together, obviously.

I am currently sitting in my office space, enjoying the Bollywood/Pink Floyd music mix the researcher who shares this room with me is listening to. She really is a sweet lady. She brought everyone in the office flowers she had picked from her yard to celebrate the first official day of summer.

My stint here in Chicago is coming to an end and I'm ready to go home. Our supervisor said he could make arrangements for us to stay on another couple of weeks if we wanted. I politely refused his offer.

I'm terrified of my upcoming oral presentation, but I try to remind myself that there are worse things that could happen other than 10 minutes of humiliation.

Yesterday was crazy. We went out out taste of Chicago and stayed for the fireworks. I'm not sure how accurate this number is, but someone said there was close to a million people there. It sure felt like there were a million people.

At some point my roommates and I were literally getting smothered for all sides as we tried to make our way down the street. The thought in my head was "Someone could get shanked and no one would even know". That's how close we all were.

After the fireworks we waited for the bus but the streets were blocked downtown because of the enormous amount of people walking out of the park. The bus driver managed to get in contact with one of the students who informed us that he was parked at a new location a couple of blocks down.

We left on the bus and were halfway back when the bus driver got a phone call. We had left two people behind and we needed to go back to pick them up.

Everyone went ballistic. They began yelling about how we should leave them there and make them take a cab. One guy yelled he was going to stab them when they boarded.

Nevertheless, we went back and picked them up. After we were dropped off I stayed behind and thanked the bus driver, letting him know that I appreciated him going back for those people as I would've wanted him to do the same for me. He replied by saying, "Of course I would have done the same for you, I would have done the same for the guy who wanted to leave them behind as well."

For some reason when I got back to my apartment I felt down. I guess just knowing that people were willing to leave someone alone at almost midnight in a not so good part of town with no real means of getting back disappointed me.

True, most of the people were visibly drunk and tired and who knows what else. I'd like to think that they wouldn't have acted that way if they were sober.

If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

There are several things that living on my own with a tight budget have taught me.

1. Leftovers are meant to be saved.
I know it's going to sound wasteful of me, but before I usually gave my leftovers to my dog. On the off-chance that it was something not conductive to her health I'd just dump it. What was I thinking?

2. You'll find your own forms of entertainment when you have to.
I'm currently without a car and on-site there is a basketball court and pretty much nothing else set up for us. Our rooms consist of the bare minimum and a television (which more often than not is devoid of anything interesting). My room is spotless because I find myself cleaning to pass the time. I've also taken up checking if my roommates have left any dishes in the sink. If so I wash all of them while listening to electronica on my iPod. Good times.

3. A room with a view comes with a price.
I have a large window facing northeast and I'm awoken around 5:30 every morning by the sun filtering in through my skimpy blinds. I miss my dark curtains and homemade-tinted window back home.

There were two skunks fighting/playing/sexing near the front door to our apartment when we got back from Chinatown today. We took the long way and went in through our back door.

My mentor eats toast with cream cheese and ketchup for breakfast. Maybe it's a Polish thing.

Nothing else significant to say. Gah, I'm so boring.

For those of you who don't know - I'm in a Bacc./M.D. program where I have guaranteed admission into a certain medical school. Today I got an e-mail that it's time to send in the application for med school. My first thought when I saw that was...

ALREADY?

It seems like just yesterday I was in high school laughing at Mr. Lane's purple car, now I'm applying to the med school of my choice. Where did the years go and how did I get so old?

I saw a bunch of white deer in addition to the coyote. There is also this nasty/huge/terrifying raccoon that frequently visits our dumpster. The coyote was terrified of me, but the raccoon is a darn punk who hisses and stares us down and then uses his grubby little paws to dumpster dive. We're all afraid of him. I've decided to name him Elmer.

Hi all, this post probably won't be long, but I thought I'd still give a more proper update.

I'm here in Chicago working in Argonne National Labs on a special project. I'm still just learning the ropes of working in a lab, but probably next week I'll start the "real" work.

There are 5 girls in three bedrooms - I'm the only one who ended up without a roommate, and not only that, I have the biggest room. I felt really guilty about that and offered the other girls my room, but they refused.

I saw a coyote on our lawn yesterday. I guess I haven't mentioned yet that the lab is situated in a wildlife park.

I have a very outgoing, enthusiastic, and authoritative mentor who is addicted to tea. I think he'd make a good character in a manga.

I wonder if I'm going to end up working for the government one day. The VA clinic, the VA hospital, now Argonne. I somehow seem to find myself associated with government organizations~

I'm a hypocrite.

After stating in this post that making a live action remake of Cowboy Bebop starring Keanu Reeves is an atrocity I find myself....

Supporting Zac Efron being cast as Light Yagami in a live action remake of Death Note. High School Musical sucked, I know that, but if a Death Note live action is going to be made, he should be the one to play Light. Am I the only one that sees it?

I don't know if he has the acting chops to play this part, but he has the look (in my opinion).

I've been trying to get my stuff together. I leave in a week for the windy city, to do research for ten weeks. Besides that not much exciting has been happening in my life, as always.

I'm not sure how much I'll be able to keep up with LJ while I'm in Chicago, but my guess is I should have a lot of time to myself since we basically work 9-5. A word to all my LJ friends out there, I may not always comment on your posts (usually because I feel I don't have anything eloquent to say/nothing to contribute), but I do read all of your guys' posts. Just felt like mentioning that.

I think I'm going back to playing rock band now, but I leave you with this song which I have found addicting:

I decided that what happened today might be considered kind of boring, so to spice the story up I'm using gifs to help illustrate what happened.

By noon [info]arachnospores, [info]tito_lj_on_lj, and I were all done with our finals.

Our reaction:

So I went to go pick up [info]tito_lj_on_lj who was almost home. There is a long backstory, but basically he has almost killed several people before on different occasions with his driving skills, plus he doesn't have a license. So basically when I heard he was behind the wheel of a car, my reaction was:

If you haven't seen Summer Heights High then you are doing yourself a disservice. It's just as awesome as Strangers with Candy in my opinion.

Have you ever seen Maito Gai look so hot? I KNOW I HAVEN'T.

This post is random and pointless because right now finals is making me too brain dead to post anything remotely elegant.

I live about 15 minutes from the border. Dr.Wedig told us we are all going to die. Saw a couple of people at school today wearing safety masks.

Today I was walking by the math building where one of the clubs on campus was selling tacos. I had just finished a really big lunch so I told the guy selling them that I didn't want any. Then as I was walking away he said, "How about a diet taco"?

>_>

I had a flashback to back when I first met [info]tito_lj_on_lj and he asked me if I was anorexic. Odd that we ended up becoming friends.

Random: I had two people ask me today if my nails are real. XD
For the record, yes, yes they are.

D.GRAY MAN

Why did I not pick this fandom up sooner? I'm currently obsessing over it. Finished all of the manga chapters in four days. Would have taken me less time if I didn't have schoolwork to do.

I'm such a sucker for characters with glasses. Komui is no exception.

NEED KOMUI ICONS.

If I wasn't such a miser/lazy bum I might even have half a mind to cosplay a DGM character, though I can't imagine who.

OK, I'LL STOP MY RAMLING NOW.
